Once upon a time in the future, next Friday and Saturday to be specific, a not-so-rowdy group of writers, otherwise known as the DCAF Eight, will gather on the Tuscaloosa town green at Government Plaza for the Druid City Arts Festival. Together they will band with tent and tablecloth where they will lay out their wares for festival-goers and seekers of paginated adventures. Peddlers and transient vendors they are, as described on the license they each have procured, though maybe only because the keen eye of the tax-man is upon them and so they must. Yet, legalities cannot rob the peddlers of their talents, which is to bring to the masses the manna they crave: ballads of romance and mystery, tales of heartbreak and honeymoon, quests of monsters and men, and sagas of outer space and inner mind.
Traveling salesmen and saleswomen they are, for what other is a transient vendor. But do not fret. The farmers and their daughters will be safe, at least for the day, though they are most certainly welcome. As are the ranchers’ widows and widowers. Nonetheless, be watchful. There could be a Bible salesman, of the Flannery O’Connor type, lurking within the pages. And though Willy Loman and Al Bundy won’t be present, their pathos and comedy will be on full display.
The DCAF Eight are all members of the Tuscaloosa Writers and Illustrators Guild (TWIG). Come along and visit their Traveling Show, this weekend. Check out their goods and take an adventure.
